In a bold statement, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen has leveled accusations of ‘hypocrisy’ against the United Nations (UN) in the wake of international criticism surrounding Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
Cohen declared that Israel would not extend the visa of one United Nations staff member currently in the country and would additionally deny the visa application of another UN employee. This move underscores Israel’s dissatisfaction with the global body, which has raised concerns about Israel’s alleged targeting of civilians and hospitals during the recent Gaza conflict, as reported by Al Jazeera.
“We will cease collaboration with those who engage in the propaganda of the terrorist organization Hamas. We will no longer tolerate the UN’s hypocrisy,” stated Cohen on X day, asserting that the UN exhibits bias against Israel.
Cohen went on to characterize the UN’s conduct as “disgraceful” since the outbreak of the conflict on October 7, triggered by deadly attacks carried out by Hamas inside Israel, resulting in the loss of approximately 1,200 lives. While the UN criticized Hamas for the October 7 assault and repeatedly called for the release of individuals abducted by the group, Israel has faced condemnation for its actions, including targeting residential areas, schools, and hospitals. The total siege imposed on Gaza following the October 7 attack has led to restrictions on aid deliveries, exacerbating the dire humanitarian situation.
Israeli attacks during this period have claimed the lives of more than 100 journalists, approximately 270 medical staff, and at least 134 UN personnel. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has consistently called for a ceasefire and condemned the severe humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
