The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports has announced plans to award 302 scholarships to students to study abroad in 2024.
The ministry said it will select 3,800 candidates who are eligible to apply for the scholarship award exam.
The ministry’s plan announced that several countries are offering scholarships to Cambodian students through the Ministry of Education for next year, including China, which has offered 70 postgraduate and 20 undergraduate scholarships.
Japan is offering 50 postgraduate, undergraduate and vocational scholarships, as well as five research scholarships. Hungary is offering 30 postgraduate and higher education scholarships.
Cuba is offering two undergraduate scholarships, while Vietnam is offering 100 undergraduate scholarships.
Laos is offering 15 undergraduate scholarships and Thailand 10 scholarships for doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees.
According to the Ministry of Education, the number of scholarships for study abroad in 2024 may change as the new year progresses.
The project to select students for study abroad scholarships was announced after the Ministry of Education announced the results of the matriculation exam on 23 November, with 98,460 students, or 72.89% of the total 135,084 candidates. Of these, 1,673 students received an A grade.
Ministry of Education spokeswoman Khuon Vicheka said the number of scholarship students who will study abroad in 2024 is similar to previous years.
She said the Ministry of Education had awarded 672 scholarships to Cambodian students this year. The students are studying in China, Japan, Hungary, Cuba, Russia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar.
She added that the subjects available for scholarship students to study abroad next year will be determined in due time after agreements are finalised through the embassies of the participating countries.
“In the past, Cambodia has also given scholarships to students from ASEAN countries such as Laos,” she said.
Vicheka noted that between 2000 and this year, 192 Laotian students received Cambodian government scholarships to study at various higher education institutions in Cambodia. So far, 140 Lao students have graduated from Cambodian colleges and universities, and 59 Lao students are currently studying in Cambodia.
At a reunion of alumni who studied in France organised by the French Embassy in Cambodia in May, Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron said that Cambodia had sent more than 1,200 scholarship students to study in France over the past decade.
