Are you a Pell Grant recipient planning to study abroad in the winter, spring, summer, or autumn of 2024? If so, consider applying for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Programme! Nearly 3,000 Gilman Scholarships of up to $5,000 are awarded each academic year!
BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INFORMATION SESSION
Katie Sullivan, a 2022 IC graduate and Gilman Scholar, hosted a virtual information session in January 2023 about the Gilman application process and her experience studying abroad in Australia.
BENJAMIN A. GILMAN PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Programme enables students with limited financial resources to study or work abroad. Recipients are selected through a competitive process and must use the award to cover eligible study or internship abroad costs. These costs include programme tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance, international airfare, and passport and visa fees.
The Gilman Scholarship Programme broadens the pool of students who study and intern abroad by supporting students who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. The programme aims to encourage students to study and intern in a wide variety of countries, territories, and regions of the world. The programme also encourages students to study languages, particularly critical need languages (those deemed important to national security). Veterans of military service are encouraged to apply and preference will be given to veterans, other factors being equal. By supporting students with high financial need, the programme has been successful in supporting students who have been historically underrepresented in education abroad.
APPLICATION CYCLE & DEADLINE
The Gilman application cycle is currently open for programmes with start dates between 1 December 2023 and 31 October 2023, and the application deadline is 5 October 2023.
ELIGIBILITY
Undergraduate students in good standing who are U.S. citizens or nationals receiving federal Pell Grant funding are eligible to apply. Students must be in the process of applying for or have been accepted to a credit-bearing study abroad or internship program.
CRITICAL NEED LANGUAGE AWARD
Applicants studying a critical need language abroad may apply for an additional award of up to $3,000 for a total of $8,000. See the Critical Need Language Award page for a list of eligible languages.
ADDITIONAL AWARD OPPORTUNITY: GILMAN-McCAIN SCHOLARSHIP
If your parent(s) or guardian(s) are active duty military personnel, you should consider applying for this separate award (in addition to the standard Benjamin A. Gilman Award). The Gilman-McCain Scholarship requires that students receive ANY type of federal Title IV financial aid while studying abroad; it is not limited to Pell Grant recipients.
