Beijing, August 28 – Wang Wenbin, the spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, has called upon the United States to cease its suppression of Chinese students studying in the U.S. under the pretext of national security. The Ministry’s statement was made in response to recent incidents where Chinese students were detained, interrogated, and deported by U.S. authorities.
During a regular press conference, Wang Wenbin addressed the issue, stating that the actions taken by the U.S., including detaining and deporting Chinese students, fabricating charges, and conducting unwarranted investigations, constitute an indiscriminate suppression driven by political motives. China firmly opposes such actions and considers them a form of persecution.
Wang emphasized that exchanges between people and cultures serve as the bedrock of Sino-U.S. relations, and academic, educational, and technological collaborations are integral components of these exchanges. Despite the U.S. government’s proclamations of support for such exchanges and for welcoming Chinese students, its actions do not align with these statements. The U.S. continues to employ the national security framework to restrict and suppress Chinese students’ educational pursuits and research in the country, thereby infringing on their legitimate rights and interests.
“We urge the U.S. to implement its promise of welcoming Chinese students, rescind executive order No. 10043 – a decree marked by bias and discrimination – and cease using national security as a justification for suppressing Chinese students studying in the U.S.,” Wang Wenbin stated. He emphasized that China remains committed to taking necessary measures to protect the rights of its students in the U.S., while also urging Chinese students to remain vigilant against associated risks.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s statement underscores the complexities surrounding educational and cultural exchanges between China and the U.S., as well as the ongoing tensions that have emerged on the basis of national security concerns.
